Baseball Opens Great West Play Friday vs. North Dakota

Wolverines Host North Dakota to Open GWC Play
The inaugural Great West Conference season begins this week for Utah Valley as the Wolverines host North Dakota in a four-game series beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. The team's will play a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. with the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

UVU was picked to win the conference in a very close vote by league coaches while the Fighting Sioux were picked to finish fifth. Other Great West series this weekend will be Northern Colorado at Texas-Pan American, NJIT at Houston Baptist and Chicago State and New York Tech.

Friday's game will be Hometown Hero night for senior catcher Kevin Arendse. Anyone from Arendse's home state of Washington can get in for just $1 while anyone from his hometown of Burlington, Washington get in for free. The first 300 fans will receive a poster and baseball card of Arendse and he will sign autographs on the concourse after the game.

About the Wolverines
UVU is 10-12 entering the weekend and ranks seventh in the nation in batting average, hitting .351 as a team. As of Thursday, Chris Benson leads the nation with a .485 average and currently is on a 20-game hitting streak while Jace Brinkerhoff is second on the team with a .420 average and leads the team with six home runs.

Last week the Wolverines went 3-2 with a 10-8 win at Utah on March 30 before splitting a four-game series with Southern Utah over the weekend. UVU finished 6-2 this year against SUU and is currently 8-2 against in-state schools with three to go.

Brinkerhoff was named GWC Player of the Week after going 12-for-21 with three home runs, three doubles and 13 runs batted in. He had a five-hit game against SUU on Friday and on Saturday he and Sage Thorpe hit back-to-back home runs as part of a school-record 14-run second inning.


On Deck
The Wolverines host Utah on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the final game between the two in-state foes this season. Following the midweek with the Utes, UVU hits to road for a GWC series at Northern Colorado.

About the Opposition
UND won three out of four games against in-state rival North Dakota State at the Metrodome in Minneapolis on Sunday and Monday. The Fighting Sioux are 4-15 overall against a tough early-season schedule that includes Wichita State, Missouri, Oral Roberts and Nebraska.
