April 25, 2011

OREM, Utah - UVU Baseball takes a short break from Great West Conference action on Tuesday to host in-state rival Utah at 6 p.m. at Brent Brown Ballpark.

The Wolverines have won eight of nine entering the game including a 12-4 win on April 12 at home against the Utes.

Utah Valley is 15-18 overall and 7-1 and in first place in the Great West and return to conference play on Thursday when NYIT comes to town for a four-game series.

Kai Hatch went 12-for-15, batting .800 over the weekend as the Wolverines took three of four from Chicago State. Austin Heaps also had a big series, batting .571 with four doubles and leads the team and the Great West with 17 on the year.

Jeremy Gendlek threw six shutout frames in the series' first game, a 10-0 UVU win, to extend his scoreless streak to 17.0 innings overall. Gendlek has the top overall ERA in the Great West at 2.17.

Utah Valley and Utah have split two games so far this season with each team winning at home. In the Wolverine win over the Utes two weeks ago, Alex Exon hit two, three-run home runs to tie a school record with six RBI. The Utes won on March 29 in Salt Lake City, 15-3.

Utah is led by All-American C.J. Cron, who is batting a nation-leading .469 with nine home runs and 42 RBI. The teams are scheduled to meet one more time - in Salt Lake City - on May 17.
