OREM, Utah - Great West Conference leader Utah Valley hosts third-place Houston Baptist in a key four-game series starting Thursday at 6 p.m. at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. before Saturday's finale at 11 a.m.
The Wolverines enter the series at 23-20 overall and 15-1 in the Great West while the Huskies are 15-33 overall and 13-8 in conference. The team sitting in second place in the standings, Northern Colorado, is 16-4 in the GWC and plays four at Chicago State starting Friday before coming to Orem next week for the final series of the regular season.
Utah Valley swept its final four road games in conference last weekend at Texas-Pan American. Jeremy Gendlek had his shutout streak end at 24 innings but the only run that scored was unearned, extending his innings without allowing an earned run to 30 in conference. He is 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA in the Great West.
Ryan Chadwick also kept his streak of no earned runs going during conference play. Chadwick has thrown 14 innings over seven appearances in the Great West without allowing an earned run, while limiting opponents to a .128 batting average.
Houston Baptist won three out of four last weekend at Chicago State. Robbie Buller leads the Great West with 11 home runs on the year for the Huskies. Utah Valley swept a four-game series last year in Houston - winning once on a ninth-inning, two-run home run by Jake Rickenbach - while also defeating HBU during the GWC Tournament to lead the all-time series 5-0.
Next week the Wolverines will play at Utah in the final non-conference game of the year on Tuesday, May 17 before the series against Northern Colorado begins on Thursday, May 19.
PROMOTIONS: Thursday is Hometown Hero Day for Kyle Beecher. Anyone from his hometown of Pleasant Grove can get into the game for free. Posters of Beecher will be given out and the senior pitcher will sign autographs after the game.
