OREM, Utah - The 2011 Great West Conference regular season title is on the line this weekend as first-place Utah Valley is set to host second-place Northern Colorado in a four-game set.
The series begins Thursday at 6 p.m. at Brent Brown Ballpark with a Friday doubleheader at 4 p.m. before the final regular season game of the year on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Wolverines (27-21, 19-1) are aiming for the second straight Great West championship and need to win one time during the weekend to clinch the title and the top seed in next week's GWC Tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
The Bears (22-27, 18-4) have won 10 straight games overall and need to win all four to clinch first. UVU and UNC finished first and second last year, in both the regular season and GWC Tournament.
Saturday will be Senior Day with Kyle Beecher, Chris Benson, Zane Gray and Brock Sargent honored prior to the start of the game. Thursday is Hometown Hero day for Chris Benson. Anyone from Orem, Benson's hometown, can get into the game for free and Benson will also sign posters following the game.
Benson became Utah Valley's all-time games played leader on Tuesday at Utah, playing in the 210th game of his career. He is also one start away from the 207th of his career, which would also put him first all-time in that category. Benson is second in the nation and leads the Great West with 89 hits.
Thursday's starter, Jeremy Gendlek, enters the weekend with the top ERA in the Great West (1.82) and also holds just a 0.49 ERA in GWC games.
