Baseball Faces 8th-Ranked Arizona on Tuesday

Feb. 20, 2012

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Utah Valley University baseball will play a single, midweek game at No. 8 University of Arizona on Tuesday at 5 p.m. MT. The game can be heard live on 960 AM the Zone and on WolverineGreen.com.

"Any time you get a chance to play a team ranked that highly it's a great opportunity for our program. Obviously going in you just hope you play well and give yourself a chance to win," UVU head coach Eric Madsen said.

The Wolverines (1-2) were on the verge of taking two of three at Seattle over the opening weekend before a late rally by the Redhawks upset those hopes. SU scored nine times in its final two at-bats to win the finale, 9-7.

UVU's win in the series came in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader, 15-2. The Wolverines finished with 16 hits in a game in which five different players had multiple hits and the team scored in every inning but the first.

Arizona took two of three in its season-opening weekend against North Dakota State in the first series in the Wildcats' new home, Hi Corbett Field, the former spring training home of the Colorado Rockies.

Tuesday's starter for Utah Valley will be junior Adam Gunn, making his first start for UVU after transferring from Salt Lake Community College, where he was the Scenic West Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2011.

Arizona will start junior Tyler Hale, who pitched 6.2 innings in a start against UVU in 2011. Hale gave up three runs on three hits while striking out three but did not factor into the decision, a 9-3 Arizona win.

Following Tuesday, UVU will play a three-game series at Nevada in Reno beginning Friday.
