OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University travels to Cedar City this week for a three-game series against Southern Utah University which begins Thursday at 3 p.m. MT and will conclude with a Friday doubleheader starting at noon.
The Wolverines were on the short end of three games at 19th-ranked (Baseball America) Cal State Fullerton last week including a 2-0 pitcher's duel on Saturday night. UVU starter Adam Gunn pitched seven innings and gave up just one run - on a sac fly in the first inning - but the Titans got a strong performance from four different pitchers on the combined shutout.
Utah Valley (2-8) has played four of its 10 games early on this season against ranked teams and after the series at SUU this week, will play two at No. 11 Arizona State early next week.
The Wolverines are led by Goose Kallunki's .368 batting average so far this season while Gunn is 1-1 with a 2.08 in three starts, two of which came at No. 7 Arizona and Cal State Fullerton.
Southern Utah is also 2-8 on the year heading into a Tuesday midweek at UNLV. The T-Birds split a four-game series at Hawaii Pacific last weekend. SUU announced earlier that 2012 will be its final season for baseball after the T-Birds move from the Summit League to the Big Sky Conference next year. Southern Utah makes the return trip to Orem at the end of March for three games.
The Wolverines will play a midweek, two-game set next Tuesday and Wednesday at the 11th-ranked Sun Devils in Tempe before three games in Northern California at St. Mary's over the weekend.
