OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley continues its current eight-game road trip this weekend at Sacramento State in a three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m. MT. The teams will also play Saturday at 2 p.m. MT and Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
It's a matchup between a pair of teams that will compete against each other in the Western Athletic Conference starting next season. UVU will enter the WAC this summer while Sac State competes in the league as an affiliate member in baseball.
The Wolverines (4-5) split a two-game midweek series at No. 10 Arizona, winning 3-1 on Tuesday before dropping a 14-5 contest on Wednesday. Utah Valley also took two of three at Portland last weekend and have gone 3-2 in its last five games, all on the road.
In the win over Arizona, Andrew Freter, Jeff Barto and Brian Whatcott combined to limit the 2012 national champions to just five hits and one unearned run. It was the fifth win all-time for Utah Valley over a ranked opponent in the program's NCAA DI era.
Kai Hatch was named the Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Wolverines to two wins in Portland. Hatch batted .364 in the series win, scoring the winning run in the opener and driving home the eventual winning runs in the second game of the series.
The Hornets (4-4) opened the season at Texas, getting a 5-3 in the middle game of that three-game set. They defeated Nevada in a Tuesday midweek after splitting four games with UC Riverside last weekend in Sacramento.
UVU is scheduled to open at home against Nevada, which is in its first season in the Mountain West Conference. It will be the Wolf Pack's first trip to Orem after the teams have played each other 20 times over the years in Reno. The series will be Thursday and Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
