OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University hosts in-state foe BYU on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. MT at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem. It's the first of three games between the neighboring schools schedule for this season.
The teams split two games last season, with each winning on the other's home field. The Wolverines (3-11) won at BYU, 8-3, and the Cougars (6-10) defeated UVU, 6-4, at Brent Brown Ballpark. Utah Valley and BYU have played 25 times prior to Tuesday's meeting, with BYU winning 18 of those contests. The Wolverines are 5-7 all-time against BYU at Brent Brown Ballpark. Head coach
Eric Madsen is 4-6 in 10 games vs. the Cougars during his tenure.
"The games against BYU are always fun for the players and the fans and a big deal to everyone involved," said Madsen. "Mike Littlewood (BYU head coach) has done a great job with them and we always know we'll have to play well and be ready to go against his teams. We need to correct some of the issues we had over the weekend and continue to make strides offensively."
The Wolverines dropped three of four in the home-opening series against Saint Mary's over the weekend. Still, the Wolverines had their best offensive weekend to date with
Mark Krueger's .471 average and five doubles garnering the junior the WAC Hitter of the Week. In UVU's win in the series, in game two of a Saturday doubleheader, freshman
Tate Harding drove in a team season-high five runs in a 10-7 victory.
Kade Andrus hit a three-run home run in the second game of the series, his first of the season, and the team's first since the first game of the year.
BYU won four straight last weekend over Hartford in its home-opening series at Larry H. Miller Field. The Cougars (6-10) scored 45 runs during the series including 31 over the final two games and highlighed by a 20-4 win last Friday. Hayden Nielsen leads BYU with a .379 batting average and 17 RBIs while Dillon Robinson is batting .323 with a home run and six doubles.
Utah Valley plays its final non-conference weekend series of the season this weekend at Creighton in Omaha. It will be the first time the Wolverines will face the Bluejays and just the second opponent from the Big East UVU has faced. That series begins Friday at TD Ameritrade Park, home of the College World Series.
