OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University enters Tuesday's midweek contest at BYU (6 p.m. MT, BYU-TV) on a season-best four-game win streak and will send sophomore left-hander
Patrick Wolfe to the mound against the Cougars. The Wolverines (10-19, 6-3) swept a three-game home series against Chicago State in WAC play over Easter weekend.
UVU and BYU are meeting in the second of three midweek games this season. The Cougars (14-17, 6-6 WCC) won the first game 10-7 in Orem behind two home runs from Colton Shaver. In that game BYU led 3-2 late but scored six times in the top of the eighth inning to turn a 3-2 advantage into a 9-2 lead. Utah Valley responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning but would get no closer. The teams will meet one more time this season, on Tuesday, April 28 in Orem.
In the series sweep of Chicago State, the Wolverines won the three games in different fashions. The opener was a 16-3 rout in seven innings with the 10-run rule in effect. In the middle game, the Wolverines erased a 5-0 deficit to come back and win on
Andy Perkins' walk-off single in the ninth inning. In Saturday's finale, UVU led 6-0 early only to see the Cougars tie it at 7-7 in the seventh. The Wolverines scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to create some breathing room and go on to complete the sweep.
In the series,
Zac Fuller was 7-for-11 (.636),
Mark Krueger batted .625 (5-for-8) and
Kade Andrus was 6-for-12 with seven RBIs and a pair of triples. UVU had six triples in the series and batted .402 as a team. Krueger reached base in his first nine plate apperances and in 12 of his 15 total PAs for an .800 on-base percentage.
BYU won three out of four games last week, winning at then-No. 29 San Diego State, 4-0, in a non-conference contest before winning two of three in a home series against Portland in West Coast Conference play. BYU travels to Loyola Marymount this weekend in conference play.
This weekend the Wolverines host reigning WAC regular season and tournament champion Sacramento State beginning Friday at 6 p.m. MT. Saturday's game is also at 6 p.m. with Sunday's finale at noon and airing on the WAC Digital Network.
