Utah Valley University hosts Big 10 Minnesota in its final non-conference weekend series of the year. The three-game series begins Friday at 6 p.m. with games Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at noon. The Wolverines open WAC play next weekend at Grand Canyon.
UVU (9-9) and the Gophers (8-6) met on opening weekend in Surprise, Arizona, with Minnesota winning 8-2 in both teams' second game of the season. The game preceded the Wolverines' upset win of then-No. 5 Oregon State during a doubleheader for UVU.
Last weekend, Utah Valley opened its home schedule with a four-game split against Portland. In the series, UVU used a four-run rally in the ninth to win the series' third game.
Zac Willis' RBI single capped the rally and gave the Wolverines their first walk-off win of the season.
Mark Krueger had a three-run home run and five RBIs in the series finale, a game the Portland won to earn the series split.
Logan Hold had two scoreless outings in relief during the series and thru his first seven appearances this season has not allowed an earned run.
Minnesota wrapped up a rain-filled series against Seattle U, also members of the WAC, on Wednesday night. The Gophers won the finale behind an 18-hit effort, 12-2, to avoid a four-game series sweep. Minnesota went 3-1 in the season-opening tournament in Surprise, losing only to Oregon State.
Offensively, the Gophers are batting .323 as a team and have three players north of .400 led buy Austin Athmann's .458 average and three home runs.
Utah Valley plays a midweek contest at Pac 12 Arizona next Tuesday night. The Wildcats are 12-4 as they enter conference play this weekend at Washington. The series at Grand Canyon begins Thursday, March 24.
