OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University scored a season-high 15 runs en route to a 15-6 win over Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at Brent Brown Ballpark to take two of three in the weekend series.
Â
The bottom three hitters in the UVU lineup drove in a combined nine runs, led by four from
Ryne Edmondson, who also had a three-run home run.
Jake Atkinson had three RBIs and
Jordan Schlehuber drove in two runs.
Â
Trevor Howell also added three RBIs for UVU (11-10) while the heart of the lineup,
Greyson Bogden,
Mark Krueger and
Spencer Gothberg, each had three-hits on the 16-hit afternoon.
"Our guys did very good job of finding a way to put in tough at-bats. We did a good job standing in there and fighting and be tough outs," said UVU head coach
Eric Madsen. "Minnesota's a very good club and they play very hard. They don't make anything easy. It was a really good job by our team as a whole to win that series."
Â
Edmondson's home run– the first of his career – came in the bottom of the second and answered a two-run home run by the Gophers' (9-8) Troy Traxler in the top of the inning.
Â
The Wolverines put three more runs on the board in the third on four base hits. Bogden, Krueger and Gothberg had consecutive singles with Gothberg's scoring Bogden from second. Two batters later, Atkinson blooped a two-out single to center, scoring both Krueger and Gothberg to give UVU a 6-2 lead.
Â
Minnesota responded with four in the fourth, tying the game at 6-6. Riley Smith had two-run double before a two-out RBI single by Matt Fiedler and an RBI double by Matt Stemper.
Â
UVU regained the lead in the fourth on a double by Howell that scored Schlehuber. The Wolverines added another run in the sixth, when Howell drove in his second run on a sacrifice fly to left, plating Edmondson, who singled, stole second and moved to third on Schlehuber's sac bunt.
Â
The Wolverines pulled away with a five-run seventh. Krueger had an RBI double to start the scoring with Edmondson picking up his fourth RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Schlehuber had a two-run single before Howell capped the scoring with his third RBI and second sac fly.
Â
With UVU nursing a 7-6 lead,
Jake Mayer worked out of a bases-loaded, one out jam, getting a line drive back right back to him before doubling off the runner at first. Mayer (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Logan Hold pitched two more scoreless innings to add to his season-long streak of 16.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
Â
The Wolverines will next play at Arizona at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. MST/7 p.m. MT. UVU opens WAC play at defending regular season and preseason league favorite Grand Canyon on Thursday in Phoenix.
