Baseball faces BYU in Tuesday midweek contest

Utah Valley will play in its home state for the first time this season when it makes the 4.3-mile trip east to Larry H. Miller Field to face rival BYU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. MT.

The Wolverines (7-6) are slated to start senior right-hander Danny Beddes (2-1, 1.50) while the Cougars (10-1) will start righty Maverik Buffo (2-0, 2.33). Both teams are off to the best starts in their respective program's history.

Utah Valley trails the all-time series against BYU, 20-8, including a 2-11 record at Larry H. Miller Field. The Cougars have won four straight and six out of seven in the series.

The Wolverines took three out of four at Pac 12 Washington State over the weekend at Bailey-Brayton Field. In the series-clinching, 10-6 win, Zac Willis went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three runs batted in. His three doubles matches a single-game school record, set 11 times previously.

UVU on the opener at WSU behind a combined four-hit shutout led by a six-inning, three-hit, seven strikeout effort from Beddes. Patrick Wolfe made the first of two hitless appearances at Washington State in the shutout. Wolfe also made a three-inning appearance in UVU's 10-9, 11-inning win on Saturday. The junior southpaw has already recorded a career-high 19 strikeouts through just 13 games so far this season. His performance earned him the WAC Pitcher of the Week award for the first time in his career. It's the first time a Wolverine pitcher has received the honor since the 2014 season.

Willis leads Utah Valley with a .419 average and 10 RBIs. Greyson Bogden leads the team with three home runs and is also batting .367.

ABOUT BYU
The Cougars have won four straight after starting the season 6-0. They swept a three-game series at Kansas over the weekend, winning a pair of one-run contests. Offensively, BYU is one to one of the best starts in the country, batting .348 as a team with 15 home runs. Six different players have multiple home runs and four players are batting .417 or better with Brennon Lund's .480 average leading the way.

Utah Vally opens its home schedule on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT with the first of four games against the University of Portland. The teams also play on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. MT with the finale slated for Sunday at noon MT.
