Utah Valley University opens its 2016 home schedule on Thursday in the first of a four-game series against the University of Portland. The teams play the first three games at 6 p.m. MT before the series finale on Sunday at noon.

The Wolverines (7-7) lost at BYU on Tuesday night but prior to that won two straight at Washington State. UVU took three of four from the Pac 12 Cougars last weekend.

Utah Valley won the opener at WSU behind a four-hit combined shutout from Danny Beddes, Patrick Wolfe, and Garrett Bowman. Zac Willis had a big series, hitting the go-ahead home run in the 11th inning of a 10-9 win on Saturday before going 4-for-5 with three doubles and three runs batted in the series' final game.

The Wolverines and Pilots (8-4) have met 15 times prior with Portland holding a slight 8-7 advantage. This marks the second series between the teams at Brent Brown Ballpark. UP won two of three in that series in 2010 while UVU took the last series, during the 2013 campaign, winning two of three in Portland.

Portland is off to its best start since 2012 and is just four wins shy of matching its 2015 win total already this season. Senior outfielder Caleb Whalen leads the team with a .419 average, and has eight doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs. He was named the WCC Player of the Week after the team's series win over UC Riverside over the weekend.

Utah Valley hosts Big 10 Minnesota in a three-game series starting Friday, March 18 at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Gophers and Wolverines met in Surprise, Arizona to start the season with Minnesota winning 8-2. It's the last non-conference weekend series of the season.
