Utah Valley University faces a big road test this weekend in a three-game WAC series at co-leader New Mexico State. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m. MT in a game that can be seen on ESPN3. Saturday's contest is slated for 1 p.m. MT with the finale on Sunday at noon MT.
The Wolverines (18-15, 5-4) are currently in fourth place in the WAC with their next two series against the two teams atop the standings. UVU won two of three last weekend at home against Northern Colorado.
In the opener, a pair of RBI triples in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tied en route to a 4-2 win. A day later,
Craig Brinkerhoff hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to win 11-8. The Bears salvaged the final game with an 8-6 victory in 12 innings. UVU is now 2-2 on the season in extra inning contests.
Mark Krueger extended his hit streak to 16 games over the weekend and leads the team with a .348 batting average. He's also batting .400 in nine WAC games and is tied with teammate
Greyson Bogden for the WAC lead with 48 hits.
New Mexico State (20-12, 8-1) shares the WAC lead with Seattle U and is coming off of a three-game sweep at Grand Canyon last weekend with all three wins coming by one run. Austin Botelo had a big weekend, driving in six runs and hitting a pair of home runs that both served as game-winners. Botelo leads NM State with a .380 average along with nine doubles and three home runs. Daniel Johnson is batting .346 with a team-high four home runs and also has 17 stolen bases.
Following this weekend's series, the Wolverines will play Utah for the final time this season next Tuesday in Salt Lake City before hosting Seattle U in a three-game WAC series starting Friday, April 22.
