Nine-run ninth gives UVU improbable win

Story Links

OREM, Utah – An improbable nine-run, ninth-inning rally propelled Utah Valley University to a 10-9 win over North Dakota on Saturday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. The comeback marks the largest come-from-behind win ever for the Wolverines in their final at-bat.

"Baseball is an unpredictable game," said UVU head coach Eric Madsen. "We had a lot of good fortune and just found a way to do it. We had so many opportunities early in the game and didn't capitalize so I guess luck was on our side in the end."

The Wolverines (15-13, 3-2) sent 12 hitters to the plate in the ninth with the first eight UVU batters reaching. Craig Brinkerhoff singled home the first run in the inning before Stone Ramsey walked to force in another run.

Spencer Gothberg followed Ramsey with a grand slam, his first home run of the year, to make it a 9-7 contest, still with nobody out in the inning.

Ryne Edmondson then walked and moved to second on a passed ball before Jordan Schlehuber bounced a single to left to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, with one out, Estrada came to bat for the second time in the inning and walked with Edmondson scoring on ball four, a wild pitch that got to the backstop.

Jeff Arens grounded to first to move Schlehuber to third and Estrada to second. Those two scored the game-winning runs on an error off the bat of Mark Krueger, which got past second base and into right center for the unlikely walk-off win.

The Fighting Hawks (5-14, 1-4) were poised to clinch the series after taking the 9-1 lead into the ninth. After Utah Valley starter Danny Beddes struck out the first five hitters of the night, North Dakota rallied with two outs in the second to score four times. Cooper Maas delivered the big blow with a bases-loaded double to right center that cleared the bases and gave UND a 3-0 lead. North Dakota extended its lead to 6-0 with two more in the fourth before the Wolverines got on the board on a sacrifice fly from Gothberg in the sixth.

Krueger finished 3-for-6 while Gothberg had career-high five RBIs. Brett Harrison had three hits for North Dakota with Maas driving in four runs.

Matt Davidson (1-0) picked up the win after throwing two scoreless innings. Davidson also tossed two scoreless frames earlier in the week, earning a save at Utah. Ellery Bresnahan (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Fighting Hawks.

Brett DeGagne´ didn't allow an earned run in 7.0 innings in making the start on the mound for North Dakota and was in line for the win before UVU's comeback. Beddes finished with eight strikeouts for Utah Valley.

The rubber match is Sunday at noon with Jackson Cofer on the hill for UVU and McKay McNair slated to start for UND.
