OREM, Utah—Seattle University's run in the top of the first inning would be all the WAC-leading Redhawks would need in a 1-0 win over Utah Valley University Sunday at Brent Brown Ballpark. With the win, SU clinches a 2-1 series win over the Wolverines.
"Seattle is a good team and that was a good series," Utah Valley head coach
Eric Madsen said. "The series was well played and you have to tip your cap to the way we pitched and our defense. I thought our guys put a lot of effort into it. We had a lot of opportunities and I'm disappointed in our ability to step up when we had chances. It's a tough baseball game to lose. We've got to do is be a little tougher at the plate."
Seattle U (25-14, 12-3) got off to a quick start, landing runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the first inning. UVU pitcher
Jackson Cofer replied with two straight strikeouts before SU's Sean Sutton singled to left field, scoring Griffin Andreychuk. UVU threw out Sutton at second on the play to get out of the inning.
Utah Valley (22-18, 8-7) threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth as
Craig Brinkerhoff led off the inning getting hit by a pitch.
Spencer Gothberg then singled up the middle to advance Brinkerhoff to second. The two UVU runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch before
Jake Atkinson walked to load the bases with no outs. However, UVU could not convert as the Wolverines' next three batters flied out to end the inning.
Janson Junk picked up the win on the mound for the Redhawks, improving to 3-3 on the season. Junk gave up just one hit in 6.0 innings of work. He registered five strikeouts with three walks.
Cofer (3-4) took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. The sophomore left-hander gave up only one run on the day.
Trevor Howell and Gothberg recorded the only hits of the day for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley will look to bounce back on Tuesday (April 26) as the team welcomes neighboring rival BYU to Brent Brown Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. MT
