DAVIS, Calif. – Utah Valley University got 6.2 innings on the mound from
Jackson Cofer and
Patrick Wolfe picked up his first career save in a 4-3 win at UC Davis on Friday afternoon.
Trevor Peterson had a pair of hits and scored two runs for the Wolverines (1-3).

Cofer struck out four while lasting into the seventh to move to 1-1 on the season.
Paxton Schultz pitched 1.1 innings of middle relief and paved way for Wolfe, who struck out a pair and stranded the potential tying run at second to preserve the win. Â

UC Davis (1-2) out-hit UVU 9-6 and got solo home runs from Ryan Anderson and Cameron Olson, but were hurt by four errors including two on one play that produced what the winning run.

With
Paul Estrada on second with two outs in the seventh, Peterson's base hit to right got under the glove of the right fielder as Estrada came in to score. As Peterson attempted to take third, the relay got away and allowed Peterson to cross the plate, giving the Wolverines a 4-2 lead.

Olson hit a solo home run in the eighth to get UC Davis within a run, 4-3. Olson's hit was the first base runner Schultz has allowed after retiring the first 12 hitters he faced to start his career at UVU. Â Â Â

Wolfe came on in the ninth and retired the first two hitters before an infield single and a stolen base put the tying run in scoring position. Wolfe then struck out Alex Aguiar to end the game.

UC Davis starting pitcher Robert Garcia was sharp early, striking out nine hitters through 4.1 innings of work. He allowed two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings overall while walking three. Chris Brown (0-1) took the loss for the Aggies.

The Wolverines jumped out quickly, taking a 1-0 lead three batters into the game.
Trevor Howell singled to lead off the game and came around to score to batters later, on an RBI double by
Zac Willis.

Cofer worked through a pair of bases loaded jams in his start. In the bottom of the third, UC Davis loaded the bases with one out before Cofer worked his way back from a 3-0 count to get Mark Cardinalli to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

The bases were full of Aggies with nobody out in the fifth and Cofer limited the damage to just one run, on a sacrifice fly, to keep the game tied after five.

The Wolverines got that run back in the sixth. Peterson doubled with one out, Willis walked and then, with two down,
Callahan Moltzan reached on an infield single to load the bases.
Kade Poulsen was then hit by a pitch to force in Peterson and give UVU a 2-1 lead.

Anderson led off the bottom of the sixth with his solo shot to again tie the game, setting up the final three innings.

Game two of the series is Saturday with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT.
