ON DECK
Utah Valley University is scheduled to open its home schedule with four games against Indiana State this weekend. The series is slated to begin Friday at 5 p.m. MT with Saturday and Sunday starting a 1 p.m. MT and Monday's finale at 3 p.m. MT.Â
THE FORECAST
According to Weather.com, it won't be warm. Friday is mostly sunny with a high of 47 while it will be at least partly cloudy the rest of the weekend and into Monday. Saturday could dip into the low 50's before upper 40's and p.m. showers on Sunday.Â
IN THE HOLE
Next week Utah Valley will travel to Pac 12 Washington State for a four-game series beginning Thursday, March 9. The Wolverines won't play again at home until March 30 in a WAC series against Sacramento State.Â
LAST TIME OUT
UVU (1-6) lost its first midweek game of the season, falling 4-1 at San Francisco on Tuesday. The Wolverines have lost three straight overall. Freshman Paxton Schultz was strong in his first career start, striking out six in five innings while limiting the Dons to two runs on seven hits. Trevor Peterson, who leads the team with a .423 batting average, and Justin Erlandson both had two-hit games for the Wolverines at San Francisco. Â
Last week in a weekend series at UC Davis, Utah Valley took game one behind a strong pitching performance from Jackson Cofer, 4-3. The Wolverines fell 9-4 in game two and 7-6 in the series finale to drop the series. UVU was four outs from winning the road series, leading 6-4 in the eighth inning, but the Aggies tied it that inning before winning on a walk-off double.Â
ABOUT INDIANA STATE
Indiana State is 3-4 so far this season and most recently split two games with Marist and dropped two to Mississippi State at a tournament in Starkville, Miss. The Sycamores are the second Missouri Valley Conference team that UVU will play this season after opening at Wichita State. In the MVC preseason poll both ISU and WSU were tied for fourth in one of the highest-rated baseball conferences in the country.
Dominic Bifano is batting .421 to lead the team while four others who've seen significant time batting over .300. Indiana State is hitting .288 as a club. Game two starter Jeremy McKinney is currently 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work. He struck out nine in 5.0 innings in the win over Marist last week.Â
