UVU Series Notes

ON DECK
Utah Valley University travels to Seattle University in the final WAC regular season series with a berth in next week's WAC Tournament on the line. The series features two 5 p.m. PT/6 p.m. MT starts on Thursday and Friday from Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Washington. Saturday's finale will be at noon PT/1 p.m. MT from Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Washington.

IN THE HOLE
The 2017 WAC Tournament begins next Wednesday from Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona. The top six eligible teams will compete for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

WAC UPDATE
With regular season champion Grand Canyon ineligible for the tournament due to its reclassification status, Utah Valley currently holds the No. 4 seed for next week's WAC Tournament.

New Mexico State can share the regular season title with GCU and hosts CSU Bakersfield, needing a sweep to match the Lopes at 20-4. CSUB is 13-8 and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Sac State and UVU are both 9-12 with the Hornets holding the tiebreaker for seeding purposes. Below those two are UT Rio Grande Valley, Northern Colorado, Seattle U, and Chicago State all at 7-14. Of those six teams, two will stay home for the tournament while four will join NM State and CSUB.

MAGIC NUMBER WATCH
Utah Valley has a magic number of just one entering the final weekend to secure a spot and have a chance to defend its 2016 WAC Tournament title. A Wolverine win would clinch the berth, as would one loss from a combination of two of three teams between UT Rio Grande Valley, Northern Colorado and Chicago State.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley fell in the final game of the UCCU Crosstown Clash against BYU, 7-6, on Tuesday in Provo. The Wolverines led for much of the game before the No. 18 Cougars came back with two runs in each of their last two at bats.

David Modler had three hits, two of which were triples, to tie the school record for triples in a game. He drove in three runs and scored twice. Trevor Peterson had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Last weekend in the final home series of the season, UVU dropped two of three to Grand Canyon. The Wolverines won the middle game behind Jake Mayer's third complete game of the season. It was the second time Mayer's gone the distance and won for UVU, including his three-hit shutout of Incarnate Word earlier this season. Mayer struck out seven and surrendered just two runs on seven hits.

ABOUT THE REDHAWKS
Seattle U is one of four teams tied at 7-14 entering the final weekend of play. The Redhawks (18-31-1) lost to Arizona State, 6-4, on Tuesday after salvaging the finale of a WAC series at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday.

SU has been without staff ace Nick Meservey, the reigning WAC Pitcher of the Year, for most of the season, and preseason All-WAC hurler Tarik Skubal, for the entire year, both due to injury.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST SEATTLE U
Utah Valley is 8-10 all-time against the Redhawks with this weekend's series a rematch of last season's WAC Tournament final, a 4-0 UVU win. The Wolverines defeated Seattle U twice during the 2016 tournament after the Redhawks won two of three during the regular season in Orem. UVU is 3-5 all-time on the road against Seattle U.
