- Utah Valley opened the 2018 season with a 5-1 win at Southern California last Friday night in Los Angeles before dropping the final two contests by scores of 5-4 and 8-6.

- Jake Mayer picked up the win in his first career opening day start after tossing 6.0 innings and surrendering just one run on four hits while striking out six.

- Paul Estrada, playing near his hometown of Long Beach, delivered the season's first RBI with a two-out RBI triple in the season-opening win.

- UVU returns 17 letterwinners from last season's team including seven starting position players, its top four pitchers in terms of starts made.

- Seven newcomers made their Utah Valley debuts last weekend at USC including pitchers Drew Hill and Fabian Palacios, each of whom had scoreless outings on the mound.

- Head coach Eric Madsen wrote down the same identical lineup for each of the three games on opening weekend.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
Pacific is in the midst of a nine-game stretch against Western Athletic Conference teams to open the 2018 season. The Tigers (1-3) dropped three of four at Seattle U to open the season and following this weekend's series play a midweek next Tuesday against defending WAC Tournament champion Sacramento State.
After winning the opener against the Redhawks, 8-5, the Tigers dropped the final three in the series at Seattle. Pacific is one of two teams from the West Coast Conference on this season's schedule for Utah Valley. BYU is the other. This weekend marks the second series all-time between UVU and Pacific. The Tigers took three of four during the 2014 season in Stockton.Â
