UVU cross country to cap regular season Friday in SLC

OREM, UTAH - The Utah Valley University men's and women's cross country teams head into the final meet of the regular season as they participate in the Utah Open, hosted by the University of Utah, on Friday Oct, Oct. 25.

The meet will be held at the Sunnyside Park that is located at 1735 Sunnyside Ave in Salt Lake City (corner of Sunnyside Ave and Guardsman Way). The competition will begin at 1 p.m. MT with the women's 5K race kicking things off. The men's 6K race will then follow at 1:45 p.m. MT. Those that would like to come out and support the Wolverines may park in the lot near Sunnyside Pavilion. Results for the meet will be posted at RunnerCard.com.

"We're heading to the University of Utah this weekend. It's an important meet for our team before we head to the conference championship next week," said head UVU coach Scott Houle.

The Wolverines have seen a busy October with races every week. Both teams are fresh off their last meet that was held in Sunnyvale, California, where the UVU women's team bested 25 other teams to win the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational and the men's team finished second behind an individual victory from senior Kevin Lynch. Senior Savannah Neuberger led the women's team for the first time on the season by posting a 12th-place finish.

Earlier this week, the reigning WAC Men's Athlete of the Year Lynch was named the WAC Athlete of the Week after his impressive success at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, outshining 178 other competitors on the 8K course with a blazing time of 23:42.3.

Friday's meet will be an in-state battle, as competitors from UVU, the host Utah Utes, Southern Utah, Utah State and Weber State will all take part in the meet.

"This meet is a very important one for teams looking to finalize their championship roster," added Houle. "It's also a last chance race for our runners looking to join the travel squad. We're excited to see what our team can do in this final meet of the regular season."

The Utah Valley men's team will enter Friday's meet ranked 11th in the Mountain Region, while the women's team checks in at 12th.

Following Friday's meet, the Wolverines will head to Kansas City, Missouri, to compete in the 2019 WAC Championship at Swope Park. Last season both teams posted top-two finishes, with the women's team taking second overall and the men's team claiming its fourth WAC Championship over the past six seasons.
