AMES, Iowa – The Utah Valley University wrestling team capped its tough Midwest road swing with a 53-0 setback to No. 14 Iowa State in Big 12 action on Sunday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.
The Wolverines were without nine of their 10 starters in the contest due to injury, while eight of ISU's starters on the day were nationally ranked.
UVU drops to 9-11 overall and 0-5 in Big 12 duals with the loss, while the Cyclones improve to 9-2 on the season and 6-1 in Big 12 action.
ISU started the dual with back-to-back major decisions from Chase Straw (157 pounds) and Zane Mulder (165) over UVU freshman

Koy Wilkinson to open up an 8-0 lead on the scoreboard. Twenty-fifth ranked Cyclone Marcus Coleman then followed with a 17-2 tech fall win over
Kyle Snelling at 174 pounds, while ISU then earned six more points from No. 15 Sam Colbray with a win via forfeit at 184 to make it 19-0.
Three-time All-American and sixth-ranked Willie Miklus then pulled out a 17-6 major decision victory over
Ashton Seely at 197 and No. 23 Gannon Gremmel followed with a third-period fall (6:31) over ninth-ranked UVU redshirt freshman heavyweight
Tate Orndorff to up ISU's advantage to 29-0. The fall marked the opener of a stretch of four of five falls in the final five matches on the day for the Cyclones.
Back at 125 pounds, No. 25 Alex Mackall then managed to pin UVU senior
Josh Jensen in the second period (4:03) and No. 7 Austin Gomez followed with another win by forfeit at 133. The reigning Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week and 11th-ranked 141-pounder Ian Parker then picked up a third-period fall over Wolverine freshman
Dylan Gregerson (6:29) while fellow 11th-ranked Cyclone 149-pounder Jarrett Degen capped the dual at 53-0 with a first-period fall (2:28) over sophomore

The dual marked Utah Valley's third Big 12 road match in the last four days, as it also faced South Dakota State on Thursday and No. 25 North Dakota State on Friday. UVU opened the trip with a tightly contested 26-16 setback to SDSU in Brookings, South Dakota, and then suffered a 47-3 loss to No. 25 NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota, before taking on No. 14 Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Sunday.
The Wolverines will now return home for their final two home matches on the season when they welcome No. 11 Wyoming and No. 16 Northern Iowa to town for a pair of Big 12 duals next weekend. UVU will first host the Cowboys on Friday, Feb. 8 before taking on the Panthers on Saturday, Feb. 9 for Senior Night. Both dual meets will begin at 7 p.m. MT and will be televised locally on UVU TV.
