UVU will enter the contest with a 3-9 record on the young season after splitting a four-game non-conference series at SJSU over the weekend. After dropping the series opener, 3-1, the Wolverines responded by coming from behind to earn a 6-5 13-inning game in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. The Spartans then responded by claiming the nightcap, 10-1, before UVU bounced back by winning a 1-0 shutout on Sunday for head coach
Eric Madsen's 300th career victory.
Â
Senior outfielder
Jake Berry was the hero for UVU in Saturday's win, as the Bay Area native went 3-for-6 with a home run in the ninth and a go-ahead RBI double in the 13th, as the Wolverines recorded the 6-5 extra-inning win. Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, Berry started a ninth-inning rally by smacking out UVU's first home run of season to left to make it a one-run game. With two runners on and one away,
Mitch Moralez delivered the game-tying RBI by driving home
Garrett Broussard with an RBI single to left to force extras. After a trio of scoreless extra innings,
Kade Poulsen started off the 13th with a leadoff single. Pinch runner
Jake Plecas then advanced to second on a passed ball and came around to score what proved to be the winning run on the clutch RBI double from Berry.
Â
In Sunday's series finale,
Mason Gray was dominant on the mound for UVU by going a career-long 8.2 innings while scattering five hits and striking out four. He faced the minimum in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, and allowed just three hits into the ninth. The Spartans then got two hits off of him in the ninth and later loaded the bases with two away, but UVU closer
Pedro Perdomo came on and drew a game-ending groundout off the bat of Johnny Mendoza to earn the save and seal the win for the Wolverines.Â
Â
Kade Poulsen led UVU offensively in Sunday's win over SJSU by going 3-for-4 with the lone RBI of the game.
Alexander Marco too had a multiple hit day by going 2-for-4.Â
Â
Poulsen also led the Wolverines at the plate in the series over San José State by hitting .429 (6-for-14) with an RBI, while Moralez followed by going 5-for-17 (.294) with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.Â
Â
SEASON LEADERS
The senior Poulsen leads UVU on the year with a .346 batting average, while Moralez follows with a .333 clip and team-leading tallies of five doubles and six RBIs. The freshman Broussard is next with an even .300 batting average, five RBIs and a team-best six runs scored.Â
Â
Jesse Schmit leads Utah Valley's starting pitching staff with a 1-0 record, 1.50 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 18.0 innings, while lefty
Logan Petet is the top reliever with an 0-0 record, 0.93 ERA and seven strikeouts over 9.2 innings or work. Freshman right-hander
Devin Smith is scheduled to start Tuesday's contest and will go up against BYU righty Tyson Heaton.
Â
MADSEN NOTCHES WIN NUMBER 300
Behind a combined shutout from
Mason Gray and
Pedro Perdomo, head UVU coach
Eric Madsen recorded his 300th career victory in 1-0 victory in the series finale at San José State on Sunday. In his 12th season at the helm of Utah Valley, Madsen now holds an NCAA Division I career record of 300-327 (all at Utah Valley). During his tenure at UVU, Madsen has led his Wolverines to three Great West Conference regular season and tournament championships, as well as the program's first NCAA Regional berth (2016 Baton Rouge Regional) after winning the WAC Tournament in 2016. He has also led his club to a pair of 40-win seasons, which included an improbable 32-game winning streak in 2012 and a program-record 47 wins that year (47-12).
