Midweek series vs Air Force set for Tuesday & Wednesday at BYU

OREM, Utah – With the new doTERRA Field at UCCU Ballpark in the final stages of completion, Utah Valley's midweek games against Air Force have been moved to BYU's Larry H. Miller Field in Provo. The midweek set will now feature a Tuesday evening contest at 6 p.m. MT as well as a Wednesday matinee at 11 a.m. MT.

With the venue change to BYU, both games will be free of charge to the public.

The midweek set will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network as well as the KSL TV app and the GoUVU channel on YouTube. Live audio and live stats will also be available by visiting GoUVU.com.

The Wolverines will enter the midweek set against the Mountain West Falcons with a 5-12 overall record after splitting a four-game series at the University of Washington of the Pac-12 Conference over the weekend. Behind stellar pitching from starters Jesse Schmit and Jaxson Otis, UVU recorded a pair of shutouts with a 7-0 win in game one and a 1-0 victory in a seven-inning affair in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader. Washington, who was receiving votes for the NCBWA top 30 poll last week, also claimed wins of 5-1 and 4-0 during the series.

In his fourth start of the season, the senior Schmit posted another quality outing for the Wolverines on Friday by going a season-high 7.0 scoreless innings and matching a season best with eight strikeouts. He also walked just one batter and scattered six hits on his way to helping UVU record the shutout. The UVU offense also shined in the game by banging out a season-high 13 hits behind a 4-for-5 performance from junior Mitch Moralez to earn the 7-0 victory. Kade Poulsen, Pacen Hayes, Alexander Marco and Garrett Broussard all also added multiple-hit outings in the win.

Then in the nightcap on Saturday, the junior college transfer Otis went the distance in a shortened seven-inning game on his way to earning a complete-game shutout. Otis baffled UW batters all game long as he allowed just three hits while striking out three and walking just one on his way to recording his first collegiate complete-game shutout. Moralez and Mick Madsen led UVU offensively in the game, as Madsen went 2-for-3 with a double while Moralez posted a 1-for-2 outing and scored the lone run of the game in the fourth inning.

The series split marked UVU's second consecutive split on the year, as the Wolverines previously split a four-game series at San José State the previous week.

The freshman shortstop Broussard led UVU at the plate in the UW series by hitting .417 (5-for-12) with two doubles and two runs scored, while Moralez hit an even .400 (6-for-15) with two runs scored and an RBI. A total of six Wolverine pitchers did not allow a run in the series, as Schmit, Otis, Logan Petet, Cole Yocum, Dylan Cook and Pedro Perdom all pitched scoreless outings.

Moralez leads UVU offensively on the season with a .357 batting average and team-high tallies of six doubles and seven RBIs. Poulsen is next with a .324 clip while Broussard follows with a .315 average and a team-leading tally of eighth runs scored. Schmit is UVU's top starting pitcher, as he holds a 2-0 record, a 1.08 ERA, and 27 strikeouts in 25.0 innings pitched. The left-hander Petet is UVU's top reliever with a 0-0 record, 0.69 ERA, one save, and 10 strikeouts in 13.0 innings of work.

Sophomore right-hander Romeo Carrillo is scheduled to start Tuesday's contest for the Wolverines, while Wednesday's starter will be announced at a later time.

ABOUT AIR FORCE
The Falcons will enter the midweek series with a 5-12 overall record after taking two of three from South Dakota State at home over the weekend. Air Force also holds wins on the year over Manhattan, Army and Campbell. AFA was picked to tie for sixth in the Mountain West this season after going 26-26 overall and taking fifth in the conference standings with a 12-14 MW record in 2019.

Cole Blatchford leads the Academy on the year with a .339 batting average, as well as team-leading tallies of three home runs, eight doubles, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored. Tommy Gillman is next with a .293 average and 11 runs batted in. Jason Shuger is one of Air Force's top pitchers with a 0-0 record, a 3.00 ERA, and 20 strikeouts in 18.0 inning pitched, while reliver Josh Leaser is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA and nine strikeouts in 12.2 innings.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS AIR FORCE
Tuesday's contest will mark the 19th all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Falcons. AFA will enter the midweek set with a 10-8 series advantage after winning a pair of high scoring midweek battles last season in Colorado Springs, 12-9 and 16-15. The Wolverines', who are 4-6 all-time against Air Force in Orem, last win over AFA came on April 3, 2018 in a 5-4 victory at UCCU Ballpark.

ON DECK FOR UVU
The Wolverines will remain at home and will look to host fellow Mountain West foe Boise State this weekend for a four-game series at doTERRA Field at UCCU Ballpark (March 13-15). If the new turf playing surface is not ready by Friday, an announcement will be made in the coming days of where the series will be held.
