Â
The Wolverines will enter the midweek set against the Mountain West Falcons with a 5-12 overall record after splitting a four-game series at the University of Washington of the Pac-12 Conference over the weekend. Behind stellar pitching from starters
Jesse Schmit and
Jaxson Otis, UVU recorded a pair of shutouts with a 7-0 win in game one and a 1-0 victory in a seven-inning affair in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader. Washington, who was receiving votes for the NCBWA top 30 poll last week, also claimed wins of 5-1 and 4-0 during the series.Â
Â
In his fourth start of the season, the senior Schmit posted another quality outing for the Wolverines on Friday by going a season-high 7.0 scoreless innings and matching a season best with eight strikeouts. He also walked just one batter and scattered six hits on his way to helping UVU record the shutout. The UVU offense also shined in the game by banging out a season-high 13 hits behind a 4-for-5 performance from junior
Mitch Moralez to earn the 7-0 victory.
Kade Poulsen,
Pacen Hayes,
Alexander Marco and
Garrett Broussard all also added multiple-hit outings in the win.Â
Â
Then in the nightcap on Saturday, the junior college transfer Otis went the distance in a shortened seven-inning game on his way to earning a complete-game shutout. Otis baffled UW batters all game long as he allowed just three hits while striking out three and walking just one on his way to recording his first collegiate complete-game shutout. Moralez and
Mick Madsen led UVU offensively in the game, as Madsen went 2-for-3 with a double while Moralez posted a 1-for-2 outing and scored the lone run of the game in the fourth inning.Â
Â
The series split marked UVU's second consecutive split on the year, as the Wolverines previously split a four-game series at San José State the previous week.Â
Â
The freshman shortstop Broussard led UVU at the plate in the UW series by hitting .417 (5-for-12) with two doubles and two runs scored, while Moralez hit an even .400 (6-for-15) with two runs scored and an RBI. A total of six Wolverine pitchers did not allow a run in the series, as Schmit, Otis,
Logan Petet,
Cole Yocum,
