Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Valley baseball dropped a game to the University of Utah, 10-8, on Monday night in Salt Lake City. UVU (16-15) led early in the ballgame, but Utah (12-18-1) kept pace and took advantage of a four-run third inning.
Utah Valley scored first after loading the bases in the first after
Daniel Dickinson reached on an error, and walks were issued to
Luke Iverson and
Trey Cutchen. UVU went up 1-0 after
Cole Jordan was hit by a pitch. They extended the lead to 2-0 after
Calyn Halvorson hit a ground ball that the Utah shortstop misplayed for an error. A sacrifice fly from
Lucas Piper made it 3-0 Wolverines. The Wolverines increased their lead to 4-0 after a bases-loaded walk to
Brandon Luna.
Utah responded to scored two in the home half of the first to make it 6-2. It didn't take long for UVU to get the runs back. Iverson started with a leadoff single to center field, but Cutchen added a one-out base hit. Later in the inning, Halvorson doubled in the gap to bring home both runners.
The Utes came back to add two runs in the bottom of the second for to make it 6-4. Utah Valley added one to their lead in the third with three straight singles from Dickinson, Iverson, and Camper to make it 7-4 UVU.
In the bottom of the third, Utah hit a pair of two-run homers to take their first lead at 8-7. UVU tied the game in the sixth after a leadoff double down the left-field line by Jordan, who would later score on a sac fly from
Lucas Piper.
The Utes regained the lead in the home half after putting the first two runners on base, they were able to move the runners into scoring position, and a sacrifice fly increased the Utah lead to 9-8. They added one more run in the seventh on a sac fly to go up 10-8.
Utah's bullpen held UVU scoreless the rest of the way for the victory.
The Wolverines and Utes will play the second game of a three-game season series on Apr. 11 at 6:05 p.m. MT at UCCU Ballpark. Utah Valley will host UT Rio Grande Valley in a three-game series this weekend.
