Wolverines ready for WAC Tournament

MESA, Ariz. – Utah Valley baseball will open the 2023 University Credit Union WAC Tournament on May 24 against Seattle U. The game is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. MST/ 10:00 a.m. MT. The Redhawks took two of three from the Wolverines in Seattle earlier this year, with UVU winning the first game and SU winning the final two games.

"We are excited to get started with postseason baseball. This team has worked very hard to get to this point, and we will work to continue to move forward," said UVU head coach Eddie Smith.

Utah Valley clinched the third seed after taking two of three at UT Arlington and getting help from Abilene Christian with a victory over Seattle U to close out the season. UVU won on Thursday night 13-3 after scoring ten runs in the first inning to jump out to a big lead. Ethan Fowlks went four innings, allowing two hits before the lights went out for a 55-minute delay.

On Friday, both teams worked through a close to five-hour delay before the game was called. UT Arlington led 5-3 at the time after scoring two runs in the home half of the sixth inning. Garrett Broussard hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Mavericks scored in the bottom of the ninth.

The Wolverines came back to pick up an 8-6 win in the series finale. UVU used homers from Broussard, Matthew Schwarz, and Patrick Mills in the win, and the UVU bullpen held on, with Reece Rodabaugh earning his second save.

ALL-TIME IN THE WAC TOURNAMENT
UVU is 9-10 all-time in WAC Tournament and won the tournament in 2016. The Wolverines will look to snap a losing streak in the tournament, and they have not won a game in the WAC Tournament since the 2016 Championship victory over Seattle U.

A FAMILIAR FOE
Utah Valley and Seattle U are familiar foes in the WAC Tournament. They have played five times since joining the WAC in 2014, and Seattle U leads the series 3-2.

ANDERSON AND DICKINSON NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-WAC
The Western Athletic Conference announced the post-season WAC awards earlier this week. Junior Casey Anderson was named First Team starting pitcher, and second baseman Daniel Dickinson was named First Team. It is the first time that UVU had a player selected for the first team since Trevor Peterson in 2018. UVU had three players selected in 2016 after Mark Krueger, Greyson Bogden, and Danny Beddes were selected.
