Utah Valley drops first game to Saint Mary's, play suspended in game two

MORAGA, Calif. – Utah Valley University fell in the opening game of a doubleheader to Saint Mary's College on Saturday afternoon. The second game of the doubleheader had play suspended after eight innings and will wrap up tomorrow. UVU (2-4) had multi-hit games from Daniel Dickinson, Burke Camper, and Garrett Broussard as a late rally fell short to SMC (4-1).

"It was a good battle all day. We are excited to get out and compete tomorrow," said UVU head coach Eddie Smith.

GAME ONE
The Wolverines scored first in the top of the first inning with a single from Cole Jordan to go up 1-0. The Gaels scored two in the second and third innings to go up 4-1.

Utah Valley answered back with a five-run seventh inning that featured Dickinson's second homer of the year, this one a three-run shot to tie the game up at 4-4. UVU regained the lead after a two-run single from Broussard that scored Camper and Nate Bach after the SMC centerfielder misplayed the ball. The Gaels answered right back in the home half of the inning and took an 11-6 lead.

UVU tried to rally late with Broussard recording his third RBI on a bases loaded walk in the eighth inning and adding an RBI single from Camper to cap the scoring for UVU in the 11-8 defeat.

Aaron Rice tossed 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one Gael hitter. Jacob Beltran pitched a scoreless eighth inning. All nine UVU batters recorded a walk in the ballgame.

GAME TWO

Utah Valley broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the second inning after a single from Calyn Halvorson. He moved up from first to third after a pair of groundouts and scored on a single from Matthew Schwarz to put UVU in front 1-0. The Gaels answered back, scoring two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, The Wolverines broke through and regained the lead, starting with a base hit from Broussard, and Isaac Lovings was hit by a pitch before Dickinson hit his second three-run blast of the day to make it 4-3. Utah Valley, later in the fifth inning, went back-to-back for the first time this year as Nate Bach and Halvorson each hit solo shots, increasing the lead to 6-3.

Lovings got in on the action with his third of the year in the sixth and the team's third of the game to go in front 7-3. Ethan Fowlks finished the day throwing 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, and recording four strikeouts.

The Wolverines added a pair of runs in the eighth as Broussard and Lovings reached base with two outs, and then Camper provided a single to plate both runners. Gray Bailey pitched in relief of Fowlks and went 1.2 innings of one-hit ball before play was suspended due to darkness at the top of the ninth inning.

Saturday's second game will conclude, starting with a Noon MT first pitch, and they will pick up in the top of the ninth inning. The two will then play the series' final game starting at 2:00 p.m. MT.  The Wolverines are scheduled to start Jackson Thomas in tomorrow's finale.
