ARLINGTON, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference named Utah Valley pitcher
Jacob Heppner as the University Credit Union Pitcher of the Week for his performance last week at Utah Tech. It's the first career honor for Heppner, who is the first Wolverine this season to receive the honor. Grand Canyon outfielder Michael Diaz was named Hitter of the Week.
"Jacob has had back-to-back outings of incredible intent. He has really worked himself into the right spot. His presence on the mound and in the clubhouse are elite day to day," said UVU head coach
Nate Rasmussen.
Heppner threw the first complete-game shutout since Logan Gerling in the 2023 WAC Tournament with his seven innings on Sunday against Utah Tech. The lefty only allowed two hits in the game and faced the minimum 21 batters. The two Trailblazers to record hits were quickly erased off the base paths after double plays.
The seven-inning outing was the longest by a Wolverine pitcher this season and was a new career-high for Heppner, who previously had a sixth-inning mark at Northern Colorado. The Litchfield Park, Ariz., native added four strikeouts and recorded the 21 outs on a season-low 71 pitches.
Heppner and the Wolverines are back in action on Monday, Apr. 7 at 6:00 p.m. MT in Las Vegas against UNLV. After a game on Tuesday, Apr. 8, they will head to Phoenix for a first-place showdown against Grand Canyon beginning on Friday, Apr. 11.
