Utah Valley heads to UT Arlington as WAC race heats up

5/1/2025 11:56:00 AM

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley baseball will travel for the final time during WAC play for the 2025 season this week as they head to UT Arlington for a key three-game series. The series begins from Clay Gould Ballpark on Friday, May 2, at 5:00 p.m. MT and will continue on Saturday and Sunday. The Wolverines enter the series tied for the WAC lead with Grand Canyon and Sacramento State, who meet this weekend in Phoenix.

BROADCAST INFORMATION
Friday and Saturday's contest will air on WAC International which you will need to create an account, but is free. The series finale will air on ESPN+. UVUstats.com will have live stats for all games.

LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines won their second series all-time against California Baptist last weekend in Orem. UVU came back from an early deficit to win the series opener, 18-14, before they clinched the series on Saturday night. The Lancers came back and won the series finale on Sunday. CJ Colyer had a strong weekend at the plate, going 4-for-6 with four hits, including a home run. UVU outfielder Jayden Smith finished 7-for-11 and scored six runs for Utah Valley.

Alan Huerta and Cooper Littledike pitched key innings in the comeback on Friday night before Colton Kennedy took the ball on Saturday and went seven innings with six strikeouts against CBU. The Wolverines' bullpen had several good outings, including George Albrecht and Luke Kimmel, who finished with scoreless innings.

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
UT Arlington enters the series with a 14-27 overall record and is 6-9 in conference play. The Mavericks dropped a midweek matchup in Fort Worth against TCU. They are led offensively by Cade Dodson, who is hitting .316 with 49 hits in 155 at-bats this season. Tyce Armstrong leads the team in homers with 10 on the year. UTA is hitting near the bottom of the WAC.

However, they are better on the mound. Caylon Dygert, Nicholas Robb, and Joe Steeber have been a solid starting pitcher combo this season and nearly won their series at GCU. The staff will look to cool down the UVU bats this weekend in Arlington.

ALL-TIME SERIES
This will be the second meeting between the two teams in Arlington and just the third overall series. The Mavericks escaped Orem last season with the series win, but the Wolverines nearly swept UTA back in 2023. Nate Bach finished 5-for-10 last year against UTA in Orem and added a 2-for-4 game with four RBIs in UVU's 16-0 win in the WAC Tournament with Logan Gerling tossing seven shutout innings during the 2023 season.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO PLAY IN TEXAS
The Wolverines have won seven of their last ten series against schools located in Texas and have won four of their previous five in the state. They have wins over UT Arlington, UTRGV, Tarleton State, and former WAC foe Sam Houston, all coming in the Lone Star state.

UP NEXT
The Wolverines are set to play in-state rival Utah on Tuesday, May 6 at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City before returning home for the senior weekend with Sacramento State. The Hornets are making their first visit to Orem since the 2022 season.
