OREM, Utah – Utah Valley opens play on Wednesday in the 2025 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament. UVU will face No. 7 UT Arlington at 1:00 p.m. MDT/noon MST from Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. The Mavericks swept the Wolverines earlier this month in Arlington.
BROADCAST PLANS
The entire tournament will air on ESPN+ with Jordan Bianucci and Brice Larson calling the game on GoUVU.com. The pregame show will begin around 10 minutes prior to the start of the first pitch.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE MAVERICKS
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two schools, with UTA sweeping the Wolverines earlier this season in Arlington. Utah Valley is 1-0 in the tournament against UT Arlington, with a 16-0 shutout over them in the 2023 WAC Semifinals. Since the win, however, the series has shifted against UVU by losing the last two series.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
This season, UTA enters the game with 20-31overall record and holds one of the best strengths of schedule in the country. They are led offensively by All-WAC second teamer Xavier Melendez, who entered the tournament with a .320 average and seven homers on the year. Cade Dodson paces the offense from the leadoff spot with a .318 average and 14 doubles. Tyce Armstrong has had a bounce-back season with a .307 average.
On the mound, Calyon Dygert is their ace and has been the Friday starter and threw today against Tarleton State. Joe Steeber and Nicholas Robb have been solid in the starting rotation this year, and one will likely get the ball on Wednesday. Keep an eye on lefty Caden Noah, who has tallied four saves this year.
WAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Wolverines are 13-14 all-time in the tournament and will be in the field for the ninth time in program history. In 2016, they defeated Seattle U for the tournament title and played in the Baton Rouge regional. They also appeared in the finals in 2023 and lost to Sam Houston. In those eight appearances, they have never played three teams in the field, having never met Tarleton State, Grand Canyon, or Utah Tech, who are making their first appearance.
UTAH VALLEY ON THE ALL-WAC TEAM
The Wolverines have four who earned All-WAC honors, which were announced on Monday. Led by first-team selections
Mason Strong and
Jayden Smith, with
Dominic Longo II and
Luke Iverson earning second-team honors. It's the most honors that the Wolverines have received since the 2016 season.
