OREM, Utah – Ten former Utah Valley baseball players are active in professional baseball as the dog days of summer continue across the leagues.
Paxton Schultz – Buffalo Bisons (AAA)
16 games (2-3, 2.27 ERA, 37 strikeouts)
Schultz spent time on the injured list before being activated by the Blue Jays on July 29 and optioned to Buffalo on Aug. 1. He has pitched well in multiple stints with Toronto, recording 27 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings in the majors. In three August appearances for Buffalo, he has worked four scoreless innings.
Casey Anderson – Amarillo Sod Poodles (AA)
3 games (0-0, 1.00 ERA, 12 strikeouts)
Anderson was called up to Amarillo on July 22, his third club this season, and has advanced two levels. His debut included three innings, one hit allowed and six strikeouts against Corpus Christi. He added three strikeouts in back-to-back appearances against Wichita (Twins) and Midland (Athletics), helping the Sod Poodles to first place in the Texas League South Division, where they lead by six games.
Mitch Mueller – FCL Twins (Rookie)
5 games (1-0, 1 save, 1.59 ERA, 14 strikeouts)
Mueller was off to a strong start in his first season of affiliated ball before going on the 60-day injured list. He finished the season with the Twins' rookie team, posting 14 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings. The team won the FCL South Division but fell to the FCL Blue Jays in the championship.
Patrick Mills – Billings Mustangs (Pioneer League)
59 games (.305, 8 HR, 38 RBIs)
In his second season in Billings, Mills went 2-for-4 with a home run in Sunday's finale against Great Falls. He has six hits in his last three games as the Mustangs push for a playoff spot.
CJ Colyer – Billings Mustangs (Pioneer League)
Offense: 24 games (.185, 1 HR, 7 RBIs)
Pitching: 14 games (1-1, 2.25 ERA, 16 IP, 14 strikeouts)
Colyer has shined on the mound, logging a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings. At the plate, he is batting .185 with one home run and seven RBIs in 27 plate appearances.
Garrett Broussard – Windy City Thunderbolts (Frontier League)
62 games (.189, 2 HR, 11 RBIs)
Broussard, coming off an injury last season, has struggled at the plate but made his professional pitching debut earlier this year. Windy City is in fifth place in the Midwest Conference West Division.
Cole Jordan – Ogden Raptors (Pioneer League)
67 games (.334, 5 HR, 57 RBIs)
Jordan is having a career year, hitting .334 with 19 doubles, five home runs and 57 RBIs. The Newport Beach, California, native is nearing 100 hits on the season.
Calyn Halvorson – Grand Junction Jackalopes (Pioneer League)
23 games (.429, 2 HR, 19 RBIs)
Halvorson returned to Grand Junction after stints with the Gateway Grizzlies (Frontier League) and Idaho Falls (Pioneer League). He is hitting .429, well above last year's .312 mark.
Landon Frei – West Virginia Black Bears (MLB Draft League)
17 games (.211, 0 HR, 5 RBIs)
In his second stint in the league, Frei is hitting .213 while helping West Virginia to a 17-6 second-half record and first place. He has five extra-base hits, including four doubles and a triple, and has played multiple infield positions.
Carston Herman – State College Spikes (MLB Draft League)
3 games (0-1, 3.00 ERA, 12 IP, 17 strikeouts)
Herman has struck out 17 batters in 12 innings over three appearances. He faced former UVU teammate Frei this summer, recording at least one strikeout against him.
