OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley baseball team opens its 2009 home schedule on Thursday with a doubleheader against Northern Colorado beginning at 3 p.m. MT at Brent Brown Ballpark. The teams are also scheduled to play on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at noon. The schedule is a change from the original game times.
After winning a tension-filled 4-3 game over Southern Utah last Thursday, the Wolverines (2-4) dropped the final two games of the series. Jace Brinkerhoff was 6-for-11 in the series (.545), earning him the Great West Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Game one starter Justin Smith was named the Great West Pitcher of the Week after picking up the win. Smith threw 8.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out five.
Chris Benson enters the week on a 23-game hitting streak that dates all of the way back to the 2006 season. Benson, who spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons on an LDS mission, ended his freshman campaign on a 17-game streak and has one hit in each of the first six games this year.
Thursday's doubleheader begins a streak of six straight games at home for UVU. The Wolverines host Big East St. John's on Monday and Tuesday at 6 p.m. MT.
