SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Utah Valley University was on the short end of a pitcher's duel, dropping a 2-0 contest to UC Davis at the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
The Wolverines drop to 3-4 in suffering their second straight loss while UC Davis improves to 3-5, including 2-1 in the tournament.
Jackson Cofer (1-1) pitched 7.0 strong innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven in taking the tough-luck loss. The only run to come in against Cofer came in the third. An error on a sacrifice bunt allowed Ignacio Diaz to move from first to third before a balk by Cofer forced in the run.
UC Davis starter Nat Hamby (1-0) matched Cofer with seven strikeouts while allowing four hits in 6.2 scoreless innings.

The Aggies manufactured an insurance run in the top of the eighth using a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and sac fly to take a 2-0 lead.

UVU got the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth but never threatened to score. Blake Peters pitched the ninth to earn his first save.

Greyson Bogden had three of Utah Valley's six hits on the day.
Jesse Emery,
Jake Atkinson and
Trevor Howell also collected hits for UVU. UC Davis finished with five hits.

The Wolverines will play a doubleheader on Sunday to wrap up the weekend. UVU faces Saint Joseph's at 11 a.m. MT before a rematch with UC Davis at 3 p.m. MT.
