UVU Game Notes
Â
Utah Valley University resumes its in-state rivalry with neighboring BYU -- ranked No. 26 in this week's NCBWA poll -- on Tuesday night at 6 p.m at Miller Field in Provo. The game will be televised on BYU TV.
The teams were scheduled to meet last Tuesday at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem, but that game was postponed due to rain. It will be made up next Tuesday, May 10 at 6 p.m.
The Wolverines (25-18) swept three games from CSU Bakersfield over the weekend, winning by scores of 7-4, 11-5, and 10-1.
Greyson Bogden started the weekend by going 3-for-3 with a home run and a double in the opener. He hit .545 and had five RBIs over the course of the series and ranks third in the league with 60 hits and is tied for the WAC lead with 14 doubles.
UVU hit five home runs during the series against CSUB with three of those coming in the finale on Sunday.
Trevor Howell hit his first collegiate home run to give UVU a 2-0 lead in the third inning and
Jake Atkinson hit his first of the season in the fourth inning.
Craig Brinkerhoff put the game away in the eighth with a grand slam for his team-high sixth home run of the season.
The Wolverines are fourth in the WAC standings at 11-7, one game back of Sacramento State and two behind New Mexico State, with nine games to go.
BYU took two of three from Gonzaga in a match up of two of the three teams atop the West Coast Conference standings. The Cougars (30-10) looked to be headed for a series loss before rallying from a 4-0 deficit in the ninth inning of the finale to win 5-4 and steal the series from the Bulldogs. BYU is currently tied with Saint Mary's in first in the WCC at 12-6, and is also third in the country in team batting (.331).
This weekend, the Wolverines travel to Northern California for an important WAC series at Sacramento State. The series begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT.
