ON DECK
Utah Valley University will host Utah in the second and final game between the in-state foes on Tuesday at 6 p.m. MT at Brent Brown Ballpark. The game will air on the WAC Digital Network.Â
IN THE HOLE
The Wolverines travel to Northern Colorado for a key WAC series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. MT. Games two is slated for 2 p.m. MT on Saturday with the finale at noon MT on Sunday.Â
WAC UPDATE
Utah Valley is currently tied for third in the WAC standings at 6-6 overall. Northern Colorado is 4-8 in conference with all four wins coming at home, where the Bears are 11-4 overall this season.Â
Grand Canyon is 1/2 game up on New Mexico State for the top spot with UVU and CSUB both third. Chicago State is fourth at 5-7, one game back of UVU while Sac State follows at 6-9, and Northern Colorado is seventh. The top six teams (minus Grand Canyon) make the WAC Tournament. If the tournament started today, UT Rio Grande Valley and Seattle U would both be out.Â
LAST TIME OUT
UVU took two of three from Chicago State over the weekend after entering the series tied with the Cougars. Jackson Cofer lasted 7.2 innings and struck out seven in a 4-1 win in the series opener on Friday.Â
The teams split a Saturday doubleheader to wrap up the series. A six-run third inning gave Chicago State a big lead, but that output was matched in the bottom half of the third by Utah Valley. The Wolverines earned the come-from-behind win, 11-10, with the two clubs combining to hit seven home runs. Callahan Moltzan had a three-run shot in the third while Jake Atkinson and Jackson Overlund, who had four RBIs, also homered.Â
Closer Patrick Wolfe had saves in both wins in the series, giving him nine on the year, which ties the school record set by Kyle Valgardson in 2016. Wolfe retired all eight hitters he faced over the two appearances and has allowed just one hit without surrendering a run while striking out 10 in six WAC appearances.Â
ABOUT THE UTES
Utah is coming off of a sweep at No. 7 Arizona last week in Pac 12 action and is 17-17 overall and owns the No. 36-ranked RPI in the country. The Utes are 8-10 in the Pac 12 and have won five of their last six games overall.Â
Dallas Carroll is batting .391 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 34 RBIs to lead the team in all four categories. Utah is slated to start freshman right-hander Spencer Kevin Johnson, who hasn't allowed a run in three appearances, spanning 5.0 innings. Tuesday will be his first career start.Â
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST UTAH
The Wolverines and Utes have faced off 50 times prior to Tuesday's contest with Utah holding a 27-23 edge all-time. Utah Valley has won four straight in the series, which matches the longest winning streak for either team against the other. UVU is 13-12 all-time at Brent Brown Ballpark against Utah.Â
