ON DECK
Utah Valley University takes a break from conference play this week starting with a Tuesday midweek contest against UNLV in Las Vegas. Game time is 6:05 p.m. PT/7:05 p.m. MT with the game airing live on the Mountain West Network.
IN THE HOLE
Following Tuesday's game, the Wolverines (9-17, 4-2) return home for a non-conference series against Incarnate Word, of the Southland Conference. That series is scheduled to begin Friday at 6 p.m. MT with Saturday slated for a 6 p.m. MT first pitch and Sunday at Noon MT.Â
CARTER RETURNS TO ALMA MATER
For the second time in his Utah Valley coaching career, associate head coach Dave Carter is returning to where he played collegiately for the Rebels during the 1988 and 1989. During his two seasons at UNLV, Carter helped the team, then in the Big West Conference, reach the NCAA West II Regionals in 1988 and the NCAA Central Regionals in 1989.Â
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley hosted Sacramento State in a three-game WAC series over the weekend and after rain affected the scheduled series opener, the teams played a doubleheader last Friday. The Hornets took both ends of the twin bill, 9-1 and 12-4, before the Wolverines came back to win the finale on Saturday, 7-6.Â
In the third and final game of the series, Sac State jumped ahead on two different occasions but both times the Wolverines answered. Trailing 2-0 after the top of first, Jackson Overlund tied the game with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first.
After the Hornets pushed two more across in the third, Zac Willis responded with a two-run double to tie the game at 4-4. Later, with the game knotted at 5-5, Kade Poulsen delivered what turned out to be the game-winning RBIs, on a two-run home run to give UVU a 7-5 lead.Â
Paxton Schultz came out of the bullpen and was solid, tossing five innings in relief and striking out a career-high seven batters to pick up his first career victory. Patrick Wolfe notched his sixth save of the year with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.Â
ABOUT THE REBELS
UNLV has lost 11 straight games and sits at 10-20 overall and 5-7 in the Mountain West Conference. Of the 11 losses, seven have come by three runs or less. Most recently, the Rebels dropped three at Iowa, losing the last two games by just one run, both in the Hawkeyes' final at-bat.Â
Five players are hitting north of .315 for UNLV with sophomore Ernie De La Trinidad leading the way with a .382 average to go along with three home runs and a pair of triples. MLB Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux is the team's pitching coach with his son, Chase, part of the Rebels' pitching staff.Â
SERIES HISTORY VS UNLV
Utah Valley and UNLV have met just once prior to Tuesday, with the Rebels winning that contest, 8-3, during the 2014 season in Las Vegas.Â
