Utah Valley State will close out its regular season home schedule with Senior Night on Tuesday against Utah in a makeup game of last Tuesday's rainout. The two schools are tied in both the season series (2-2) and all-time series (5-5). The Wolverines beat the Utes on May 3rd in Salt Lake City 12-8 on the strength of a seven run fourth inning.
Tuesday's game will be the last home game for eight Wolverines. Jeff Broadhead, Brady Drake, Kory Drew, Jeremy Harris, Beau Giles, Trent Perry, Kevin Hashimoto and Jed Jensen are all seniors. One player, Adam Frumes, is also a senior but was injured earlier in the year and out for the season. Broadhead hasn't played since March 5th due to an injury. Hashimoto and Jensen are the first four-year seniors in Utah Valley State baseball history.
Wolverine Update:
The Wolverines were off last week after the postponement of Tuesday's game against Utah. They previously came off of their most challenging week of the season when they went 2-4 in games against BYU, Utah, #17 Arizona State and #8 Arizona on May 2-8. The biggest win of the week came on Wednesday the 4th when Utah Valley upset Arizona State in Tempe in its first win ever over a Top 25 opponent.
Jed Jensen threw seven strong innings and scattered 10 hits while striking out nine and allowing four earned runs. Kevin Hashimoto had two hits, two runs and two runs batted in for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley finished off its week with three losses at #8 Arizona. The Wildcat pitching staff was more that Utah Valley's bats could handle as they allowed only three runs the whole series. On the flipside their offensive output was equally as impressive, putting up 35 runs on the board in the series.
Quick Hits:
- Sophomore Dan Bulow is done for the season after breaking his foot against Arizona State. He is currently the team leader in home runs and barring a major change, will finish the season as the Division-I Independent leader in home runs per game. It was a spectacular season for Bulow, who also had a slugging percentage of .690.
- Eli Slesk continues to lead the team in batting with a .376 average. Slesk went 0-for-4 on Sunday, stopping his consecutive game hit streak at 13. The 13 game streak is tied for the longest streak on the team with Kory Drew who did it earlier in the season.
-Â Trent Perry has been hitting the ball well lately. When pretty much everyone else was struggling to get hits, Perry looked right at home against Arizona. As a team Utah Valley hit just 19-for-97 (.196) while Perry was 6-for-11 (.545).
Senior Profiles:
Catcher Jeff Broadhead has spent three seasons playing for the Wolverines. As a junior, Broadhead was 2nd on the team with a .373 average. He was also named to the Division-I Independent All-Academic Team in 2004 with a 3.40 Grade Point Average.
Pitcher Brady Drake is the currently Utah Valley State-??s all-time leader in complete games and has thrown three this season, including a 14-4 win at Washington State in March. Drake has also been on the Division- I Independent All-Academic team the last two seasons.
In just one season here in Orem, Kory Drew has certainly made his presence felt. The Pleasant Grove native has played nearly every inning this year for Utah Valley State and leads the team in hits. On March 29th, Kory was named Division-I Independent Newcomer of the Week.
Adam Frumes' career at Utah Valley State was cut short after he suffered a season ending injury after just one appearance. In that appearance, the pitcher went 2 1/3 innings allowing one earned run.
After a one-year stint at Mesa State, Beau Giles returned to Utah Valley where his junior college career began. This year, Beau leads the team in saves with 2 and in pitching appearances with 19. During his junior college career, he amassed a career 4-1 record for Coach Steve Gardner.
Jeremy Harris has spent the past two seasons with Utah Valley State after beginning his junior college career at Eastern Utah. Last season in a series against Northern Colorado, Jeremy went 8-for-11 with five runs scored and three runs batted in. This year, he is third on the team with 80 assists while playing third base, shortstop and second base.
Trent Perry-??s career at Utah Valley State will be one for the record books. Perry will leave the school as its current NCAA leader in home runs, doubles, runs batted in and games played. Trent was named CollegeBaseballInsider.com-??s National Player of the Week and Division-I Independent Player of the Week after his performance in a series against Air Force and North Dakota State in February.
Kevin Hashimoto is one of only two four-year seniors in Utah Valley State-??s history. Hashimoto has spent two seasons at the Division-I level after playing his first two years at the junior college level under coach Steve Gardner. Kevin has had an outstanding senior season, as he is currently hitting .323 with nine doubles, two home runs and 17 runs batted in.
Jed Jensen will be starting his final home game on the mound tonight. He is the other four-year senior at Utah Valley State and will leave the school as the all-time leader in several categories including wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched. Jed picked up the win last week when the Wolverines beat a ranked opponent for the first time in school history, a 9-to-6 victory over #17 Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona.
