OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley will host New Mexico State in the final WAC home series of the year starting Friday at 6 p.m. MT. Saturday is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch with Sunday's finale at noon MT. All three games on the weekend will be featured on the WAC Digital Network. Saturday's game is Senior Night with
Kade Andrus,
Boyd Bell,
Palmer Page and
Braden Poole honored prior to the start of the game.
The Wolverines (13-28, 9-9) enter the weekend tied with Sacramento State in sixth place in the WAC standings. With Grand Canyon ineligible, the teams would be the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds if the season ended today. The top six teams qualify for the tournament in Mesa, Arizona.
Utah Valley fell short in a Tuesday midweek against BYU, falling 5-2 in front of a season high 4,240 fans at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Wolverines were bitten by a three-run home run in the first inning, which turned out to be the difference in the game.
Prior to Tuesday's game, UVU lost two out of three over the weekend to Grand Canyon in a home WAC series. After GCU won the opener 14-6, the teams traded one-run wins with UVU taking the middle game, 6-5, before a 4-3 'Lopes win in the finale.
New Mexico State dropped two of three at Chicago State last weekend. The Aggies (7-32-1, 4-13-1) previously won two of three against league leader Grand Canyon the week before and are the only team to take a conference series from the 'Lopes so far this season.
NM State alum Brian Green is in his first season as head coach and despite his team's overall record, they've posted a 1-1-1 mark against Bakersfield and also split a four-game series at Hawaii in addition to the series win over GCU.
The Wolverines won two of three at New Mexico State last year and then, in the opening game of the WAC Tournament, UVU erased an 8-1 NM State lead and win 11-10. Utah Valley holds a 4-3 mark all-time against the Aggies.
Utah Valley plays its final home game next Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Utah. The Wolverines will then travel to North Dakota for a WAC series in Grand Forks beginning Friday, May 8.
