Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – Utah Valley University dropped its first midweek contest of the season, 4-1, on Tuesday at the University of San Francisco. Freshman
Paxton Schultz made his first career start and pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings while striking out six.
Despite Schultz' line he took the tough-luck loss as six different USF pitchers limited the Wolverines to just five hits on the day.
Justin Erlandson and
Trevor Peterson each had two hits for Utah Valley.
The Wolverines led 1-0 after a run in the third.
Nick Simmons, playing near his hometown of Concord, California, doubled with one out and eventually moved to third on a passed ball. He initially held at third on a ground ball off the bat of
Trevor Howell but came in to score when the runner from first, Erlandson, slid into second and the USF defender lost his balance, allowing Simmons to score.
San Francisco tied it in the fifth when Aaron Ping doubled off the wall in left, and took the lead an inning later on an RBI single by Ross Puskarich.
The Dons added two insurance runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter with Allen Smoot driving in both runs on a base hit up the middle.
Grant Young (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for San Francisco and got the win while Joey Carney picked up the save. For UVU
Eric Olguin pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.
The Wolverines are schedule to open their home schedule with a four-game series against Indiana State University beginning Friday at 5 p.m. MT.
