OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley University wrestling team will brave the cold this week when it travels to the Midwest for a trio of challenging Big 12 Conference dual meets. UVU will first head to the Dakotas to face South Dakota State and No. 25 North Dakota State, before concluding the trip at No. 14 Iowa State on Sunday.

UVU will travel to Brookings, South Dakota, to take on SDSU on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT at Frost Arena. The Wolverines will then head north to face No. 25 NDSU on Friday at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT in Fargo, North Dakota, before capping the trip in Ames, Iowa, on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT/2 p.m. CT at No. 14 ISU.

All three duals will be streamed live on FloWrestling.org (for a fee) and live results will also be available for both the SDSU and NDSU matches by visiting TrackWrestling.com.

Temperatures in the area are currently brutally cold, but are slated to warm up in time for this weekend's competitions. Thursday is scheduled for a high of 8 degrees in Brookings, while Friday is set for a high of 16 degrees in Fargo. The wind chill will make the temperatures feel much colder, however, as a wind chill warning is in effect in the area.

Utah Valley will enter the busy week with a 9-8 overall record and an 0-2 start to Big 12 Conference action. The Wolverines, who are currently receiving votes on the most recent NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, split a pair of home duals on Friday, Jan. 25 against CSU Bakersfield of the Pac-12 Conference and Big 12 rival West Virginia. UVU first defeated CSUB 18-14 after winning six of the 10 bouts, before closing the day with a 26-13 setback to WVU. Despite winning three of the final four matches in the nightcap against the Mountaineers, the Wolverines couldn't overcome a 23-0 deficit as it ended up falling to the Big 12 foe.

Ninth-ranked heavyweight Tate Orndorff and 12th-ranked 174-pounder Kimball Bastian led UVU in the pair of duals last week by each going a perfect 2-0. Fellow ninth-ranked Wolverines Matt Findlay (141) and Demetrius Romero (165) too went undefeated on the day by each going 1-0, while 26th-ranked 184-pound senior Will Sumner went 1-1 with a first-period fall.

With UVU trailing the Roadrunners by a score of 14-12 with two matches remaining, redshirt freshman Ashton Seely (197) did a nice job of filling in for an injured 14th-ranked Tanner Orndorff by pulling out a 6-0 victory over CSUB's Mark Penyacsek to give the Wolverines a 15-14 advantage with one match to go. Ninth-ranked heavyweight Tate Orndorff then sealed the win for UVU with a 12-5 decision over Jarrod Snyder to propel the Wolverines to the 18-14 win.

After dropping the first six matches to fall behind 23-0 to West Virginia, Utah Valley then responded by winning three of the final four bouts to fall by a score of 26-13. Bastian started the spurt with a 12-2 major decision over James Wujek at 174 and Sumner followed with a 1:26-fall over Jackson Moomau to make it 23-10. After a loss at 197, the Wolverines then capped the dual with a 4-2 decision from No. 9 Tate Orndorff over No. 32 Brandon Ngati.

RANKED WOLVERINES
UVU will enter the week with six grapplers currently nationally ranked and a trio in the top-10. Findlay (141) and Tate Orndorff (285) are both ranked No. 9 on the most recent NCAA Coaches' Panel ranking, while Romero (165) checks in at No. 9 on the most recent FloWrestling poll. Bastian is next by being ranked as high as No. 12 at 174, while two-time NCAA qualifier Tanner Orndorff is No. 14 at 197 and the senior Sumner is No. 26 on the latest NCAA Coaches' Panel ranking. Romero fronts the group on the season with a 19-2 win-loss record, while Tate Orndorff is 18-4, and Findlay is 14-1 overall and 13-1 in dual competition. Findlay is slated to miss this week's action, however, with an injury.

WELCOME TO THE TOP 25
UVU is currently receiving votes and just outside of the top 25 for the second consecutive week on the NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Prior to the last two weeks, the Wolverines found themselves nationally ranked for 10 consecutive weeks between spots 21-23 on the NWCA Coaches Poll. Utah Valley will now look to make its way back into the poll, as it is currently holding three votes on the most recent poll.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
The Jackrabbits will enter Thursday's dual with a 1-6 overall record and a 0-3 clip in Big 12 action. SDSU had a banner year a season ago in which it went 14-2 overall, a perfect 8-0 in Big 12 duals and finished the season with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Jacks also crowned their first national champion at the NCAA Division I level in 133-pounder Seth Gross, who is currently injured and out of the lineup in 2018-19. SDSU holds its win on the year over Oregon State, and has dropped contests to Big 12 foes Northern Iowa, Oklahoma and Fresno State, as well as Minnesota, Arizona State and Pittsburgh.

A pair of Jackrabbits will enter Thursday's dual currently ranked, as Henry Pohlmeyer is No. 18 at 149 and Zach Carlson checks in at No. 33 at 184. Pohlmeyer leads SDSU with a 16-8 record on the year while Carlson is 15-6.

Thursday's contest will mark the 14th all-time meeting between UVU and SDSU. Utah Valley will enter the contest with an 8-5 series lead despite having dropped each of the last four meetings, which includes a 31-10 setback in Orem last season and a 29-10 loss in Brookings in 2017.

NDSU will enter Friday's dual with an 8-5 overall record and a 3-3 Big 12 Conference clip. The Bison reentered the national rankings at No. 25 on the latest InterMat Dual Rankings after going 2-0 last week with wins over Central Michigan and Northern Colorado. North Dakota State also holds wins on the year over No. 17 Northwestern, Indiana, Northern Illinois, Oregon State and Big 12 foes Air Force and Fresno State. NDSU has suffered setbacks to No. 12 North Carolina, No. 18 Pitt, No. 21 Iowa State, No. 21 Wyoming and West Virginia.

A total of five Bison are currently nationally ranked. Brent Fleetwood leads the way by coming in at No. 8 at 125 pounds, while Cam Sykora is 16th at 133, Andrew Fogarty is 20th at 165, Jaden Van Maanen is No. 31 at 149 and Brandon Metz is No. 32 at heavyweight. Fleedwood leads NDSU with a 18-3 record, while Sykora is 17-5 and Fogarty is 14-3.

Friday's matchup will mark the 13th all-time meeting between the Wolverines and Bison. NDSU will enter the competition with a 9-3 series lead, but UVU has won each of the last two meetings. Utah Valley first knocked off No. 23 NDSU in Fargo, 22-16, in 2017, before defeating the No. 24 Bison, 26-13, in Orem last year.

Iowa State, who is ranked No. 14 in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, will enter the week with a 7-2 overall record and a 4-1 clip in Big 12 action. The Cyclones had won six straight duals before dropping a tightly contested 22-15 contest to No. 3 Oklahoma State in Stillwater last Sunday. Prior to the setback, ISU had defeated No. 23 North Dakota State, Ohio, Fresno State, Rider, West Virginia and Oklahoma. The Cyclones also hold a 37-3 victory over SIU Edwardsville on the year and a 19-18 setback to No. 2 Iowa. ISU will first host SDSU on Friday night before welcoming the Wolverines to town on Sunday afternoon.

The Cyclones will enter the week with eight of their 10 probable starters currently appearing in the national rankings. Senior and three-time All-American Willie Miklus leads the way by coming in at No. 6 at 197, while Austin Gomez is No. 7 at 133, Ian Parker (141) and Jarrett Degan (149) are both ranked 11th, Sam Colbray 15th at 184, Gannon Gremmel No. 23 at heavyweight, Alex Mackall No. 25 at 125 and Marcus Coleman No. 25 at 174. Parker (19-2) is the reigning Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after knocking off No. 10 Dom Demas of Oklahoma and No. 12 Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State last week.

Sunday's contest will mark the fifth all-time meeting between UVU and ISU. The Cyclones have won all four previous meetings and they were ranked second, fifth, seventh and 16th nationally at the time.

UP NEXT FOR UVU
After the busy week, the Wolverines will return to Orem for their final two home duals of the season next weekend when they welcome Big 12 foes Wyoming and Northern Iowa to town. UVU will first face No. 11 Wyoming on Friday, Feb. 8 before hosting No. 16 Northern Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 9. Both contests are scheduled for 7 p.m. MT starts at Lockhart Arena and will be televised locally on UVU TV.
